Two Iowa stories, both of which became national news, were the top news stories of 2009, based on balloting by journalists in the Gazette and KCRG-TV9 newsrooms. The top story was the June 24 murder of legendary Aplington-Parkersburg High School football coach Ed Thomas as he worked with students in the school’s weight room
